Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta is seeking a Finance Officer to be an integral part of our team. Reporting to the Director of Finance, responsibly maintain a complete and accurate set of accounting and payroll records for Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta.

Duties & Responsibilities

Maintains a complete and accurate accounts payable/cash disbursement system by:

  • ensuring that proper authorization is provided by the appropriate Program Director, and the Chief Administrator Officer, on all documents requisitioned for payment;
  • ensuring that all requisitions are properly coded with supporting documentation as required;
  • addressing all vendor telephone and mail enquiries regarding accounts payable;
  • maintaining a complete and accurate vendor filing system for Accounts Payable; and,
  • maintaining a proper vendor filing system of all cash disbursements complete with supporting documentation. All cash disbursements shall be filed in a timely manner.

 

Maintains and monitors a complete and accurate cash receipts system by:

  • recording all cash receipts (cheques and cash) received by Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta;
  • ensuring that proper supporting documentation is attached to all deposit records and filed in chronological order; and,
  • ensuring all bank deposits are completed in a timely manner, either the same day that funds are received or the next banking day.

 

Assists with maintaining and monitoring a complete and accurate payroll system by:

  • ensuring that a proper payroll management system is in place and implemented;
  • ensuring that the correct statutory deductions are taken at source and remitted to the Canada Revenue Agency on a timely manner;
  • recording and monitoring correct premium deductions for group insurance and benefits and ensuring that payments to the carrier are made in a timely manner;
  • preparing a year-end reconciliation of payroll for the approval of the Director of Finance and ensuring that the required T4’s is prepared for all employees; and,
  • assisting the Director of Finance in the closing of employee payroll accounts upon termination of employment

 

Provides additional general accounting services including

  • reconciling all general ledger (balance sheet) on a monthly basis; and,
  • accepting other related duties as assigned by the Director of Finance

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

Post-secondary diploma in accounting or equivalent education and experience in accounting.

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge in generally accepted accounting principles; experience with computerized accounting software programs and systems; knowledge and experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable; preparation of financial reports and experience with payroll systems; effective verbal communication skills and skills in dealing with creditors and vendors; developed organizational skills.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Reliable transportation to attend work; willingness and ability to travel within Treaty 8 (Alberta) territory and other destinations when required; willingness and ability to work after hours and/or weekends when required; willingness to submit to oath of confidentiality; ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) an asset.

 

SALARY RANGE

Base Salary $55,000 to 75,000
